A Note about Pricing
Let's talk about pricing .
First, consider the cost of materials:
A Queen Size Quilt requires 5 to 15 yards of material, @$13-18/yd
6-8 yards of binding & backing @$8-15/yd
3 yards of batting @$12.95/yd
Materials can cost as much as $425.
Second, consider the artist's time:
Labor based on $25/hr, median wage for skilled artisans with years of experience & training
Making a Top includes designing the pattern, shopping for fabric, prepping fabric, cutting fabric, sewing blocks together, adding sashing and borders. Complex patterns require at least 40 hours of work to make a top. Many require more; some less.
Several of my quilts are hand-quilted. Hand-quilting adds value and beauty to a quilt--it also adds a lot of time to its creation. Machine quilting takes less time. I do not have the resources to own a long-arm quilting machine, so machine quilting is more time-consuming in my little workshop. Hand-quilting a queen-sized quilt can take up to 80 hours of work. Machine quilting, up to 40.
Total Labor Cost = $2000 to 3000.
Total Cost of to create a Beautiful Quilt $2200 to 3425.
